Eye-area concerns

Eye-area concerns can include dark circles, puffiness, hollows, excess upper-lid skin and fine lines. Several features often occur together, but they can have different causes. Appearance alone cannot reliably distinguish pigmentation, swelling, shadowing, skin laxity or true eyelid drooping.

What you may notice

  • Dark or uneven colour below the eyes
  • Puffiness or visible lower-lid bags
  • A hollow groove between the eyelid and cheek
  • Upper-lid skin that appears heavy or folded
  • Fine lines or crepey texture

Why it can happen

The skin around the eyes is thin and changes with age. Genetics, sun exposure, allergies, dermatitis, fluid retention, facial fat position, bone structure and loss of tissue support can all contribute. Brow descent or eyelid ptosis may mimic excess eyelid skin, while fatigue can temporarily exaggerate shadowing without being the underlying cause.

What may help

Gentle skincare, sun protection and treatment of allergy or dermatitis may help when these contribute. Pigment, visible vessels, hollows, dynamic lines, fat prominence and loose skin require different approaches. Options may include medical skin treatment, carefully selected injectables, light or laser procedures, or eyelid and brow surgery. The eye area has little margin for error, so assessment should include eyelid position, ocular health and anatomy.

When to consult

Seek prompt assessment for sudden eyelid drooping, painful or hot swelling, marked redness, vision changes, severe headache or inability to open the eye. For longstanding aesthetic concerns, consultation helps separate skin, volume, fat and eyelid-position causes.
