Sagging neck skin

Loose neck skin is skin laxity or folding beneath the chin and along the neck. It may occur with ageing, sun damage or major weight change and can coexist with submental fat, muscle bands and reduced jaw projection. These components need separate assessment.

What you may notice

  • Skin folding beneath the chin
  • Reduced definition between jaw and neck
  • Crepey or thin-looking neck skin
  • Laxity after weight loss
  • Visible neck bands or fullness nearby

Why it can happen

Collagen and elastin decline with age and ultraviolet exposure. Genetics, smoking and changes in weight influence skin quality. Deeper tissue descent, platysma muscle separation and fat distribution can make the same area look loose even when skin is only one part of the concern.

What may help

Sun protection and stable weight help prevent additional change. Skincare or resurfacing may improve surface texture, while energy-based treatments can offer limited tightening in selected cases. Liposuction addresses fat rather than loose skin. A neck lift can remove excess skin and tighten deeper structures when laxity is substantial. The safest plan depends on skin quality, anatomy and medical risk.

When to consult

Consult a qualified clinician to distinguish skin laxity, fat and muscle bands. New swelling, a lump, pain, swallowing difficulty or a rapidly changing neck contour should be medically assessed.
