Quick FAQ↘

Fotona4D is a non-invasive laser treatment for facial tightening and lifting, done without injectables, needles or surgery. It works on both the outside of the face and inside the mouth, which is what sets it apart from most skin lasers and gives it its "lifting from within" effect.

It's used mainly for early to moderate signs of ageing: a softening jawline, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, mild jowls, loss of firmness and overall skin quality. Results build gradually as your skin makes new collagen.

How it works

Fotona4D uses two laser wavelengths — Er:YAG and Nd:YAG — delivered in four steps, which is where the "4D" name comes from. Each step reaches a different depth:

  1. SmoothLiftin — an Er:YAG step done inside the mouth, gently heating the tissue around the lips and lower face to stimulate collagen where it supports the outer skin.
  2. FRAC3 — an Nd:YAG step that targets deeper imperfections and pigment, and kick-starts renewal in the deeper layers.
  3. PIANO — a longer Nd:YAG pulse that heats the deeper skin in bulk for a tightening effect.
  4. SupErficial — a light Er:YAG "peel" that refreshes the surface for a smoother, brighter finish.

Together these heat the skin at multiple levels, causing existing collagen to contract straight away and prompting the body to build new collagen over the following weeks. The lift and firmness develop over that time rather than all at once.

Fotona4D runs on the Fotona SP Dynamis platform.

What to expect

A session is typically comfortable and usually needs no anaesthetic. Most people feel warmth during the treatment. Because part of it is done intraorally, expect the practitioner to work inside the mouth for one of the steps. A full-face session generally takes around an hour.

Results and sessions

Some tightening and glow can be visible soon after a session, but the fuller effect develops over roughly 2–3 months as new collagen forms. Clinics often recommend a short course of sessions, followed by occasional maintenance. The right number depends on your skin and goals, so this is best confirmed at consultation.

Downtime and recovery

Downtime is minimal. Mild redness and a feeling of warmth or slight tightness are common for a short time afterward, and most people return to normal activities the same day. Because it isn't an aggressive ablative resurfacing, peeling and prolonged recovery are not typical.

Risks and side effects

Fotona4D is generally well tolerated. Possible short-lived effects include redness, mild swelling, warmth or temporary sensitivity. As with any laser, less common effects can include blistering, changes in pigmentation or, rarely, scarring, particularly if aftercare isn't followed. A qualified practitioner will assess your skin type and history first. People who are pregnant, have certain skin conditions, active infections in the treatment area, or take photosensitising medication should raise this at consultation.

Fotona4D vs other options

Compared with an ablative CO2 laser, Fotona4D is aimed at tightening and lifting with much less downtime, rather than deep resurfacing of texture and scars. Compared with injectables, it works by stimulating your own collagen instead of adding filler or relaxing muscles, so the effect is gradual and natural-looking. It's often chosen by people who want a firmer, lifted look without needles — though it doesn't replace surgery for significant sagging.

FAQ

What is Fotona4D?

A non-invasive laser treatment that tightens and lifts the face using two wavelengths in four steps, including a step done inside the mouth. No needles or surgery.

What does it treat?

Softening jawline, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, mild jowls, loss of firmness and general skin quality.

Is it painful?

Most people find it comfortable and it usually needs no anaesthetic. You'll feel warmth during the session.

Why is part of it done inside the mouth?

The intraoral step heats tissue that supports the lower face from within, which helps the lifting effect in a way surface-only treatments can't.

How long until I see results?

Some effect can show soon after, but the fuller result develops over about 2–3 months as new collagen forms.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually a short course, then occasional maintenance. The exact number depends on your skin — your clinic will advise.

Is there downtime?

Minimal. Mild redness and warmth are common briefly; most people return to normal activities the same day.

Is it safe for darker skin tones?

The Nd:YAG wavelength is generally considered suitable across a wide range of skin tones, but your practitioner will confirm based on your skin.

Does it replace a facelift or fillers?

No. It stimulates your own collagen for gradual tightening and doesn't replace surgery for significant sagging or filler for volume.

How long do results last?

Collagen changes are gradual and not permanent; many people maintain results with periodic sessions.
