Vertical neck bands

Vertical neck bands are cord-like lines that become visible from the jaw towards the collarbone, especially when tensing the neck. They usually reflect the edges or activity of the platysma muscle and are different from loose skin or horizontal creases.

What you may notice

  • Vertical cords during speech or neck tension
  • Bands visible even when the neck is relaxed
  • Reduced smoothness beneath the chin
  • Coexisting loose skin or jawline change

Why it can happen

The platysma is a thin superficial neck muscle. With ageing, its edges may separate or become more visible as skin and deeper support change. Muscle activity, genetics and neck anatomy influence the pattern. Fat and skin laxity can coexist but are separate targets.

What may help

Small doses of muscle-relaxing injection can soften dynamic bands in selected people, but may affect swallowing or neck function if poorly placed. Surgical neck lifting can tighten or reposition the platysma when bands accompany substantial laxity. Skin treatments alone do not correct a prominent muscle band. Assessment should consider muscle activity, skin, fat and jaw support.

When to consult

Consult an appropriately trained clinician before treatment. New neck muscle spasm, weakness, swallowing difficulty, pain or an unexplained lump needs medical evaluation.
