PRP for Hair Loss  in Belgium: what to expect and where to find trusted clinics

PRP for Hair Loss — Full Guide: Benefits, Risks, Recovery, Prices & Trusted Clinics in Belgium

Quick FAQ↘

Androgenetic alopecia affects up to 80% of men and 40% of women by age 70. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has emerged as a therapeutic option to stimulate hair regrowth. This treatment uses your own blood platelets to reactivate hair follicle activity.

To learn more about how PRP works and its other applications, see our complete guide to PRP in Belgium.

PRP for Hair Loss: How Does It Work?

PRP is obtained from a blood sample, then centrifuged to concentrate the platelets. This concentration reaches 4 to 6 times normal values.

Platelets release growth factors (PDGF, VEGF, EGF, TGF-β, IGF-1) that stimulate hair follicles, prolong the growth phase of hair, and improve scalp vascularization.

Indications for PRP Hair Treatment: Who Is It For?

PRP is intended for people with mild to moderate androgenetic alopecia. Effectiveness is better when treatment is started early.

In men, studies show a significant increase in hair density at 3 and 6 months. A meta-analysis of 238 patients confirms these results compared to placebo.

In women, a review of 628 patients demonstrates improvement in hair density and thickness, with high levels of satisfaction.

Limitations: PRP works best preventively. If you have advanced baldness with complete absence of follicles, results will be limited. Patients with recent alopecia (less than 5 years) generally respond better.

PRP Effectiveness for Hair: Scientific Evidence

Clinical studies show encouraging but modest results:

  • A study of 35 patients reports an average increase of 20 hairs/cm² after treatment
  • Another study measures an increase of 33.6 hairs in the treated area and 45.9 hairs/cm² for total density
  • A meta-analysis of 10 trials (555 patients) confirms that hair density is significantly higher with PRP than placebo

Microscopic examination of treated tissues shows an increase in hair follicles and improved vascularization.

Important: Effectiveness varies greatly from person to person. This variability is explained by protocol differences (preparation, concentration, activation) and individual characteristics (age, severity of alopecia, blood quality).

PRP Hair Treatment Results: When to See Them and How Long Do They Last?

Onset

First improvements generally appear after 3 months. Maximum effect is seen between 3 and 6 months.

Standard Protocol

The standard protocol includes 3 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions every 6 to 12 months.

Duration of Effects

Results are not permanent. Without maintenance treatment, hair density decreases gradually. Some patients experience new hair loss 12 to 16 months after the last treatment and then require new sessions.

PRP Hair Treatment Pricing in Belgium

A PRP hair treatment session costs approximately €250 per area in Belgium.

A complete protocol (3-4 initial sessions + annual maintenance) therefore represents an investment of €750 to €1,000 in the first year, then €250 to €500 per year for maintenance.

Cosmetic PRP is not reimbursed by INAMI or health insurance.

Contraindications for PRP Hair Treatment

You cannot have PRP if you have:

  • Coagulation disorders or anticoagulant treatment
  • Thrombocytopenia (low platelet count)
  • Active infection or sepsis
  • Active cancer (especially bone or blood)
  • Hemodynamic instability

Special precautions if you:

  • Take anti-inflammatories (stop 48h before)
  • Have recently received corticosteroids
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Suffer from severe anemia
  • Smoke (may reduce effectiveness)

A prior medical consultation is essential to verify your eligibility.

Side Effects of PRP Hair Treatment

PRP is generally well tolerated. Side effects are mild and temporary:

Common (disappear in 24-48h):

  • Pain during injection
  • Scalp redness
  • Mild swelling
  • Small bruises
  • Tightness sensation

Occasional:

  • Mild headaches
  • Itching
  • Temporary hair shedding 4-6 weeks after (then improves)

Serious risks: No serious adverse effects (infection, scarring, allergies) have been documented in clinical trials. Allergic risk is almost nil since we use your own blood.

PRP and Combined Treatments for Hair Loss

Important: PRP does not replace hormonal treatments. It is recommended to continue minoxidil, finasteride, or spironolactone if you are taking them.

Studies show better results with combinations:

  • PRP + microneedling: significantly superior improvement in hair diameter and density (88% satisfaction)
  • PRP + topical minoxidil: additive effect with better density than with single treatment

PRP works better as an adjunct treatment in a comprehensive strategy.
