Lip volume

Lip volume refers to the natural or age-related fullness and projection of the lips. Thin lips and asymmetry are common normal variations. A perceived lack of volume may also reflect lip shape, dental support, surrounding wrinkles or facial proportions rather than volume alone.

What you may notice

  • Naturally thin upper or lower lip
  • Reduced fullness with age
  • Less visible red lip
  • Asymmetry between sides
  • Loss of border definition

Why it can happen

Genetics and facial development determine baseline size and shape. With age, the lips may thin and lengthen as soft tissue, teeth and bone support change. Sun exposure and smoking contribute to surrounding lines but are not the only reason lips appear smaller.

What may help

Lip care and sun protection support surface health but do not create structural volume. Hyaluronic acid filler can temporarily alter volume, border and proportion; fat transfer or surgical lip procedures are alternatives in selected cases. More product is not always more natural, and swelling can distort early results. Vascular occlusion, infection, nodules and asymmetry are recognised risks.

When to consult

Consult an experienced medical injector or surgeon to assess proportions, dental support and goals. New swelling, a lump, ulcer, colour change or weakness of the lip requires medical or dental assessment.
