Quick FAQ↘

Fotona LipLase is a non-invasive laser treatment that plumps and defines the lips without fillers or injections. Instead of adding a substance, it stimulates your lips to build their own collagen, for a fuller, smoother, more defined look that develops naturally.

It's used to add subtle volume, improve lip definition and the vermilion border (the edge of the lip), soften fine lines around the mouth, and refresh the lip area. It suits people who want a natural enhancement without needles or filler — though it produces a gentler, more gradual effect than injectable fillers.

How it works

LipLase is a two-step treatment using a non-ablative Er:YAG laser in Fotona's SMOOTH mode:

  1. An intraoral step (inside the mouth) that improves fine lines around the lips and encourages a subtle eversion — the lip turning slightly outward — for a fuller appearance.
  2. An outer step targeting the body of the lips and the vermilion border to define shape and stimulate collagen.

The controlled heat activates fibroblasts (the cells that make collagen) in the lips, prompting collagen remodelling and new collagen over the following weeks. For deeper stimulation, the Nd:YAG laser in PIANO mode may also be used, as it reaches deeper tissue gently with minimal surface effect.

Because you develop your own collagen, there's nothing artificial added — the change comes from your own tissue.

LipLase runs on the Fotona SP Dynamis platform, and is often combined with Fotona4D or SmoothEye.

What to expect

A session is quick and generally comfortable, with a warm sensation on and around the lips. No injections are involved. Because part of it is intraoral, the practitioner will work inside the mouth for one step.

Results and sessions

Some immediate response is often visible thanks to collagen contraction, with the fuller, more defined result building over the following weeks. A short course of sessions is commonly recommended for the best and longer-lasting effect. The exact number depends on your lips and goals — confirm at consultation.

Downtime and recovery

Downtime is minimal. Mild swelling, redness or warmth of the lips is common briefly afterward — some temporary puffiness is normal given the area — and usually settles within a short time. Most people return to normal activities the same day.

Risks and side effects

LipLase is generally well tolerated. Possible short-lived effects include lip swelling, redness, warmth or tenderness. Less commonly, as with any laser, there can be temporary changes in sensation or pigmentation. Cold-sore-prone patients should tell the practitioner, as laser treatment around the mouth can trigger a flare. A qualified practitioner will assess suitability first. Pregnancy, active infections around the mouth, and photosensitising medication should be raised at consultation.

LipLase vs lip filler

LipLase and filler achieve fullness differently. Filler adds volume instantly by injecting a substance into the lip. LipLase adds no substance — it stimulates your own collagen, so the effect is subtler and builds gradually. It appeals to people who want a natural enhancement without needles, or who prefer not to use filler, but it doesn't create the same degree of added volume that filler can.

FAQ

What is Fotona LipLase?

A non-invasive laser treatment that plumps and defines the lips by stimulating your own collagen — no fillers or injections.

What does it treat?

Lip fullness and definition, the lip border, and fine lines around the mouth.

Is it painful?

Most people find it comfortable, feeling warmth on and around the lips. No injections are used.

How is it different from lip filler?

Filler injects a substance for instant volume. LipLase adds nothing — it prompts your own collagen, so the effect is more natural and gradual, but subtler than filler.

How long until I see results?

Some immediate response is common, with the fuller effect building over the following weeks.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually a short course for the best, longer-lasting result. Your clinic will advise.

Is there downtime?

Minimal. Some brief lip swelling, redness or warmth is normal and settles quickly; most people carry on with their day.

I get cold sores — is that a problem?

Tell your practitioner. Laser around the mouth can trigger a flare, and they may suggest preventive steps.

How long do results last?

Collagen changes are gradual and not permanent; periodic sessions help maintain the effect.

Can it be combined with other treatments?

Yes — it's often paired with Fotona4D or SmoothEye.
