Managed website design or custom web design for aesthetic clinics?

A professional custom clinic website usually costs €/$/£3,000–20,000+ upfront. Hosting, maintenance and later changes often cost extra. A managed website subscription lowers the initial cost and includes ongoing care. Compare the real deliverables: design quality, SEO foundations, page limits, revisions, clinic workload, updates, ownership and exit terms. iGlowly starts at €/$/£250 to launch and €/$/£99 per month. It includes human art direction, connected clinic content, ongoing updates and technical maintenance—without AI-generated patients or fixed page packages.

You need a website that represents your practice properly. You also need to know what it will cost, how much work it will create and who will look after it after launch.

Managed website design combines the website with ongoing hosting, maintenance and agreed updates. Custom web design is usually commissioned as a project, with ongoing care arranged separately. Both can produce a professional clinic website. They leave very different amounts of work with the clinic.

For an aesthetic clinic, med spa or plastic surgery practice, either model can work. The better choice depends on the design, functionality, ongoing costs and support included.

The same decision sits behind aesthetic clinic website design, med spa website design, medical spa website design and plastic surgery website design. The terminology changes by market. The practical question does not: who does the work after launch?

The short version:

  • Choose custom web design when you need original UX or functionality and already know who will manage the website afterwards.
  • Choose a managed website service when you want design, hosting, maintenance and routine updates handled together.
  • Compare the actual website, clinic workload, long-term cost and exit terms—not only the first invoice.

What does a managed website service include?

“Managed website” and “website subscription” are not precise definitions. A monthly payment can describe three different arrangements:

  1. Website-builder subscription. You pay to use software. Your team builds and updates the site unless you hire someone separately.
  2. A build paid in instalments. The project price is spread across several months. You may still owe the balance if you leave early.
  3. A managed website service. You pay for the website and continuing work. This can include hosting, technical care, content updates and design improvements.

Ask one simple question: what will a real person continue to do for the clinic each month? A recurring invoice does not necessarily mean a managed service.

Managed website design vs a custom website project

What to compareCustom web design projectManaged website design
Initial priceA professional clinic website usually starts at about €3,000 / £3,000 / $3,000. A well-known agency can charge €20,000 / £20,000 / $20,000 or more.Usually a smaller launch fee, followed by a monthly charge. iGlowly starts at €/$/£250 to launch + €/$/£99/month.
Ongoing costHosting, maintenance, licences, support and later changes may all be separate.Hosting and maintenance are usually included. Content and design updates depend on the plan.
TimelineOften several weeks or months. Bespoke discovery and revision rounds add time.Often faster when the structure and design system already exist. iGlowly’s targets range from 2–3 business days to about two weeks, depending on treatment scope.
DesignCan include completely original UX, layouts and art direction.Often starts from an established system. The quality of the adaptation varies greatly.
Revisions before launchUsually an agreed number of concepts or revision rounds. Extra rounds may be billed.May offer limited visual choices rather than open-ended revisions. Check before signing.
Clinic effort before launchAt the lower end, freelancers and small agencies usually expect the clinic to supply finished copy for every page, along with images and other assets. Larger agencies often include copywriting and coordination, reflected in the price.A good service should organise existing material and keep requests focused. The clinic still needs to confirm facts and approve medical content.
PagesOften scoped and priced by page, template or content volume.May still impose page limits. iGlowly scopes by treatment families and does not sell a fixed page bundle.
Updates after launchDone by the clinic or billed through a developer or care plan.Routine updates should be defined in the monthly service. Check limits and turnaround times.
SEO setupDepends on the project scope. It may be included, basic or separate.Depends on the provider. A monthly fee does not automatically mean ongoing SEO work.
Ownership and leavingCheck what is handed over, which licences continue and whether another developer can work on it.Check cancellation, content ownership, export and early handover terms.

The table shows the commercial difference. It does not tell you which provider will produce the better website.

Professional web design cost should never be compared from the initial fee alone. Include the clinic’s time, website maintenance cost and the changes the site will need over its first two years.

What should a managed website design service include?

“Fully managed” is too vague on its own. Look for a written scope covering both launch and ongoing care.

Before launch

Check whether the service includes:

  • Human visual direction and proper mobile design
  • Treatment, concern and practitioner pages that connect to one another
  • Pricing, suitability, risks, recovery and consultation information
  • Booking, enquiry, phone and WhatsApp routes
  • Organisation of your existing copy, brochures and price lists
  • Migration of useful pages and articles
  • Preservation or redirection of established URLs
  • Connection to your current booking system
  • Privacy and legal foundations for your market
  • Page titles, descriptions, canonical URLs and internal links
  • An XML sitemap and relevant, valid structured data
  • Analytics, performance checks and launch quality assurance

Our guide to what an aesthetic clinic website should include covers the patient-facing content in more detail.

After launch

Ask who handles:

  • Hosting, security, backups and technical faults
  • Browser, device and performance maintenance
  • Prices, hours, practitioners, treatments, images and booking links
  • New treatment pages
  • Sitemap, internal-link and structured-data maintenance
  • Visual and layout improvements over time

Then ask how requests work. How many are included? What counts as one update? How quickly are they completed? What is billed separately?

Good web design and management should make those responsibilities explicit. A website design and maintenance service described only as “support included” is too vague.

What does website maintenance cost after a custom website project?

The invoice marked “website complete” is rarely the final website cost. After a custom website project, a clinic may still pay for:

  • Hosting and infrastructure: hosting, CDN, SSL, backups and email services
  • Platform costs: CMS plans, premium themes, plugins, fonts or software licences
  • Technical maintenance: software updates, security work and compatibility fixes
  • Support: a monthly care plan, retained hours or ad hoc developer time
  • Content changes: prices, practitioner profiles, treatment information and images
  • New work: pages, sections, integrations, forms or booking changes
  • SEO work: technical checks, metadata, internal linking, local pages and content
  • Urgent repairs: downtime, broken forms, expired licences or failed updates
  • Future redesign: visual changes when the original site begins to feel dated

These costs are billed in different ways. You may see a monthly care plan, an hourly rate, a minimum support block or a separate quote for each change.

To compare fairly, calculate the same period for each option:

First-year cost = build or launch fee + 12 months of recurring costs + expected updates + essential extras.

For example, iGlowly’s Practice Launch is €/$/£250 to launch + €/$/£99 per month. The first 12 months therefore cost €/$/£1,438 before applicable tax and optional services. This is a comparison period, not a minimum commitment.

Our separate guide explains aesthetic clinic website costs in more detail.

The clinic’s time belongs in the comparison too. A “small update” can involve finding a developer, explaining the change, checking several pages and testing the result. For a solo injector, this often happens after patients. For a clinic manager, it competes with everything else already on the list.

How can you assess managed website design quality?

Do not judge a clinic website from its homepage screenshot. Test a full patient journey:

  1. Open real pages on a phone. Check the menu, treatments, practitioner profiles, prices, forms and booking route.
  2. Start with a treatment, then a concern. Try “CO₂ laser”, followed by “acne scarring” or “I look tired”. Both routes should lead somewhere useful.
  3. Inspect one important treatment page. Look for suitability, risks, recovery, realistic results, price, the named practitioner and an appropriate next step.
  4. Test the connections. Move between the treatment, practitioner, price and booking route. The information should agree across the site.
  5. Ask for technical evidence. Request full live sites, mobile performance, a working form, the sitemap, redirect planning and examples of structured data.
  6. Ask what happens after launch. Who fixes broken routes, updates old information and keeps the design from becoming dated?

Structured data should be valid and match information visible on the page. More markup is not automatically better.

Use our 25-point aesthetic clinic website checklist to test a current site or a provider’s example.

iGlowly compared with a generic managed website service

Managed services vary. Some are carefully built by designers and developers. Others begin with a generic template or an AI-generated first draft. AI can speed up production, but it does not replace art direction, clinical content decisions or quality control.

This table shows what to clarify when comparing iGlowly with another managed service. It does not claim that every provider works in the same way.

AreaA generic or AI-led managed offer may provideiGlowly managed websites
Who it is built forA system used across many business typesAesthetic clinics, med spas and plastic surgeons
Design processAutomated styling or a lightly adapted templateHuman-led art direction within four established design directions, adapted to the clinic’s brand, photography and tone
Launch revisionsVaries; AI regeneration is not the same as design directionThe clinic chooses a direction and palette; open-ended art-direction revisions are not included
Clinic architectureA standard brochure structureAn audit-informed structure connecting concerns, treatments, practitioners, prices and patient information
Page limitsA fixed number of pages or a charge for each extra pageNo fixed page bundle; the site grows from the clinic’s treatment and information structure
TextThe clinic may need to supply finished copy, or AI may produce the first draftExisting websites, brochures, treatment sheets and price lists are organised and migrated; new text matches the clinic’s terminology and is approved before publication
PhotographyAI-generated people and clinic scenes are increasingly common in fast, low-cost buildsReal clinic and practitioner photography is strongly preferred. Existing photos can be professionally improved. Curated stock photography can fill temporary gaps, but we do not use AI-generated people.
SEO foundationsBasic titles or an SEO pluginIndexable pages, titles, descriptions, internal links, canonical setup, local foundations and URL preservation where relevant
Sitemap and structured dataNot always included; ask to inspect themXML sitemap plus valid structured data for relevant clinic, location, service and practitioner information
BookingA form or provider-specific booking toolThe clinic’s existing booking system is connected rather than replaced
Ongoing updatesVaries; limits and response times may be unclearOne standard update per week, up to four per month, normally completed within two business days
Design after launchThe initial template may remain unchanged unless a redesign is purchasedShared layouts, visual details, performance and components continue to improve as the iGlowly system evolves
Custom redesignsDepends on the planNew bespoke layouts, original art direction and clinic-requested redesigns are quoted separately
Clinic effortThe clinic may still write, upload and connect the contentThe clinic supplies existing material, confirms facts and approves clinically sensitive content; iGlowly handles the build and connections

AI-generated faces can look polished, but patients now see the same artificial expressions and perfect skin everywhere. In aesthetic medicine, that can weaken trust. A real photograph of the practitioner or clinic is usually more credible, even when it needs editing. If a clinic does not yet have enough photography, iGlowly uses carefully selected stock images until real images are available—not synthetic patients or practitioners.

The monthly value should be the continuing human and technical work, not simply an AI-generated website plus hosting.

What iGlowly does differently

iGlowly brings design, content organisation, migration, technical SEO and ongoing management into one service. Its structure comes from our audit of 200 aesthetic clinic websites.

We do not count pages

We scope the launch by treatment or procedure families because that reflects the work of preparing the clinic. The final page count comes from the connections the patient needs.

In real builds:

  • A solo practice with only four treatments produced 36 useful pages.
  • A practice with 15 treatments can exceed 50 pages.
  • A clinic with around 25 treatments can exceed 70 pages.

Those are not pages added to make the site look larger. They include treatment, concern, practitioner, pricing, patient-information and practical pages. A patient can move from a question to an option, from an option to the right practitioner and from interest to a sensible next step.

We keep the site current

The €/$/£99 monthly service includes hosting, technical maintenance and up to four standard updates per month. These can cover prices, hours, team details, text, FAQs, images and booking links. They can also include one new treatment page per month within the existing structure, using content you provide or approve.

The website does not stay visually frozen at launch. Improvements to shared layouts, components, mobile behaviour and visual details can be carried into managed sites as the iGlowly system develops. A clinic-specific redesign or new custom component remains separate work.

Faults that are our responsibility do not use the clinic’s update allowance. The clinic sends its existing website, price list, brochures, practitioner details, images and booking links. We organise them and identify gaps. The clinic confirms facts and approves sensitive medical content.

You can see the complete scope and current pricing for our aesthetic clinic website design and management service, also adapted for med spas and plastic surgeons.

What happens if you leave a managed website service?

Cancellation and website handover are separate questions. Check both before signing with any provider.

With iGlowly, you can cancel at any time. Your domain, supplied assets and clinic data remain yours. Separately purchased copy becomes yours once paid for. Clinic-specific launch copy becomes reusable after 12 months of continuous service.

A portable copy of the clinic-specific implementation is free after 24 months, with an earlier buyout available. iGlowly’s reusable framework, internal tools and automation remain excluded. Another provider would need to host and maintain the exported site.

Which website design model is right for your clinic?

A custom web design project is often the better fit when:

  • Original UX or art direction is central to the project
  • You need unusual functionality or custom integrations
  • You have an internal website team or a trusted developer
  • You prefer to fund a larger project upfront

A managed website service is often the better fit when:

  • You do not want the website to become another clinic job
  • Your prices, team, treatments or images change regularly
  • You want predictable hosting, maintenance and update costs
  • You want a strong clinic structure without funding a bespoke build
  • You value a site that continues to improve after launch

The payment model is only the beginning. Compare what patients receive, what your team must do and what remains supported a year from now.

If you would like us to assess your current setup, send iGlowly your website or Instagram. We will prepare a report and an initial design proposal. No call is needed, and there is no obligation.
