Nipple shape
Nipple shape includes projection, size, direction, inversion and symmetry. Considerable variation is normal and the two sides rarely match exactly. A stable lifelong feature differs from a nipple that has recently changed, which requires medical assessment.
What you may notice
- Flat, projecting or inverted nipples
- Different size or direction on each side
- Large or puffy areolae
- Asymmetry after pregnancy or surgery
- Irritation from friction or clothing
Why it can happen
Genetics and development determine baseline anatomy. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, ageing, weight change, breast surgery and scarring can alter shape. Some inverted nipples are congenital; new retraction may result from inflammation, scarring or breast disease and should not be assumed to be cosmetic.
What may help
Protecting irritated skin and addressing infection or dermatitis may relieve symptoms. Surgical techniques can reduce or reshape the nipple or areola or correct selected inversion, but may affect sensation, milk ducts and breastfeeding. The approach depends on the exact anatomy and whether function needs to be preserved.
When to consult
Promptly consult a breast clinician for new inversion, discharge, bleeding, a lump, eczema-like change that does not settle, or skin dimpling. Stable aesthetic concerns can be discussed after breast health is assessed.
